An old baby portrait gives a restoration less to hold onto than almost any other photograph. The features are small, the skin is naturally without texture, and studios often softened the lens on purpose — so the honest information in the print is sparse even before fading and spotting arrive.

That starting point creates the specific risk with infants: over-smoothing. AI polishing tends to remove what little surface a baby's face has, and the result slides from photograph toward porcelain doll. A real child has faint shadows around the eyes and mouth that carry the likeness; once those are averaged away, the picture is clean but no longer quite that baby.

Tone problems are the safer territory. Hospital and drugstore prints frequently drift toward a warm pink-orange cast as their dyes age, and christening gowns, blankets, and bedding are usually so pale that the child nearly dissolves into them. Rebalancing that cast and opening the contrast between skin and fabric is work the AI does reliably and reversibly.

Deliberate softness is not damage. Many portrait photographers used diffusion on infants as a style, so a fully sharpened version is not the hidden truth of the picture — it is a different picture. Ask for the fading and marks to be treated while the gentle focus stays.

Be realistic about the smallest details. In a tiny or badly faded print, the exact shape of an infant's eyes or the precise expression may simply never have been recorded, and anything the software draws there is a plausible guess rather than a recovered fact. Softness in those areas is the honest outcome.

Scan at 600 dpi or higher and include the reverse, where a name, a weight, or a date in a parent's handwriting often survives. That note may be the only thing that later distinguishes one baby from a sibling photographed in the same gown.

Judge every draft at the size it will actually be seen. Magnified to full screen, a gentle result can look disappointingly soft; printed at frame size, the same file usually looks right, while an aggressively sharpened one turns brittle. A small test print settles the question quickly.

Compare the draft directly against the capture before keeping anything, and if two versions exist, hold them side by side: the one that still resembles the family's memory of that child is the correct one, whatever the pixel count says.
